My name is Matt Toresco. I'm a patient with a rare, complex autoimmune condition that took nearly two decades to diagnose correctly. In that time I had eight surgeries, accumulated somewhere between $20 and $25 million in healthcare costs, and sat in front of dozens of specialists who read the chart but never heard the patient.
What saved me wasn't a better doctor. It was becoming a better advocate for myself — learning to document what I felt, track what changed, and walk into appointments with evidence instead of memory. When I did that, everything shifted.
